Mosaic is an annual program sponsored by the San Jose Mercury News, San Jose chapter of the California Chicano News Media Association, the Castellano Family Foundation, Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, San Jose State University and other Bay Area media outlets and foundations.
The two-week program is held on the San Jose State campus, where students
will work in the university’s newsroom and live in the campus
dormitories.
At the end of the two weeks, students will have learned the basics of
reporting and writing under the guidance of professional Bay Area journalists.
They will have spent hours tracking down real-life sources such as politician,
celebrities, lawyers and police officers. They will see their bylines
or photo credit line published in their own newspaper.
Preferably, we want applicants who will be juniors or seniors in the upcoming year at high schools in Santa Clara, San Benito, Santa Cruz, southern Alameda or southern San Mateo counties. Latino, African-American, Native-American and Asian American students are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience is not required, but you should have good writing skills, a willingness to learn and the desire to explore a career in journalism.
The program is limited to no more than 20 students and full participation (including living on campus) is required. There is NO COST to students selected to participate. Food and housing accommodations will be provided. Students will be supervised around the clock by adults.
Accepted students will be eligible for a college scholarship.
